Dark Kandy

Barry Johnstone has been making music under the Dark Kandy alias since 2018, driven by a passion for underground sounds that hit hard on the dancefloor without losing their groove. Based in Dumfries, Scotland, he came to production late but moved fast — landing releases on Unbelievable Music, Mavic Music and Keep On Techno within a few years of picking up his first piece of kit.

His sound has evolved considerably since those early days. Where once he ranged across tech-house and hard techno, Dark Kandy has settled into a deeper, more considered space — deep tech and deep house built on rolling grooves, warm low end, and the kind of rhythmic precision that comes from spending serious time with Native Instruments Maschine.

In 2023 he joined Wirelab Records as co-label partner, bringing both his production output and a sharper creative focus to the imprint. Since then the label has hit its stride — consistent releases, a tighter sound, and a growing reputation in the underground house and techno community.

On 29th August 2026, Dark Kandy and Wirelab Records take the next step — bringing the music off the record and into the room with the label’s first ever club night at The Attic Grain Store, Dumfries.
